Sino-foreign Human Genome Research Project Launched in Shanghai

The Chinese National Human Genome Center (CHGC) and pharmaceutical multinational Roche (China) Saturday signed an agreement for co-operation in human genome research for schizophrenia and diabetes.

CHGC Director Chen Zhu said it is the researchers' hope that the project will help in the development of genic medicines for the diseases, which are expected to become the major health risks for China's growing aged population.

Roche will provide 300,000 US dollars as well as technical support and personnel training in the next three years for the project.

All data and results of the research will become the joint property of the two sides.

The CHGC is a major Chinese participant in working draft of the Human Genome Project.

Roche now has six joint ventures and a solely-funded company in China producing pharmaceuticals, vitamins, fine chemicals and other products.
