A landslide caused by Friday's heavy rain has killed eight people and injured eight others in Huxian County, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, local officials said on Sunday.
At press time, four are still reported missing, and local people say they are unlikely to be alive.
The landslide occurred when a sudden rainstorm hit Laoyu Township. Rainfall reached 93 mm in 40 minutes, washing down mud and rock from the mountains. Three stone houses located half way up a mountain with 20 people inside were destroyed by flooding.
A rescue team composed of 620 local residents and servicemen are still working on the spot.
