Government Fully Respects Academic Freedom, Tung

Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Friday stressed that the government fully respects academic freedom and will not interfere with academic research.

"We all recognize the importance of protecting academic research and academic freedom because this is a very important foundation of our success," Tung said during the stand-up session.

He said in Hong Kong, all persons, universities and other institutions are free to conduct opinion polls as they have been doing all these years.

"We are taking opinion polls very seriously because that is the very foundation for us to formulate good policies," he noted.

Tung said, "We have to do what is good for the people of Hong Kong. We have to understand their feelings and this is why I say these opinion polls are so important to us."
