Shanghai, China's largest industrial city, will build a network for the comprehensive application of global positioning system (GPS) technology.
The 10 million yuan (125 million U.S. dollars) project will include 14 GPS benchmark stations, a GPS weather service network and an earth surface surveying network, said a local official.
"It will help us improve weather forecast and get more information about changes in the environment," he said. It will also benefit Shanghai's urban construction and traffic control, he added.
It is learned that the network, the first of its kind in China, will also be part of an international GPS application system.
