Chinese Swimmer Wu Yanyan Tested Positive

Wworld champion Wu Yanyan has tested positive for an anabolic steroid, a top Chinese swimming official confirmed on Friday.

Wu, world record holder of the women's 200 individual medley tested positive for the anabolic substance 19Norandrosterone at the Chinese national championships in Jinan in May and the Chinese Swimming Association notified FINA on June 8, said CSA vice chairman Zhang Qiuping.

The 22-year-old Wu, from southeast China's Guangxi province, broke the 200 meters individual medley at the Chinese National Games in Shanghai in October 1997. She also won the event at the 1998 world championships in Perth, Australia.

Wu and her coach Wu Jicai has been suspended pending a hearing, Zhang said.

Zhang added that the Chinese Swimming Association will make a final decision on punishment of the offender next week.

Wu is expected to be banned for four years.

The Chinese swimming body has conducted 271 doping tests this year, in which Wu was the only positive case.
