Taiwanese Spies Sentenced to Imprisonment

The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court on Thursday announced the first-instance verdict in a spy case involving three Taiwanese.

According to the court, Yang Mingzhong, Yao Jiazhen, and Zhang Wei were spies hired by the military intelligence department of Taiwan. They came to Beijing and Shanghai separately, attempting to steal political, economic and military secrets in the municipalities.

Yang was sentenced to death with two years of reprieve. He was deprived of political rights for life and all of his personal property.

Yao was sentenced to life imprisonment and stripped of lifetime political rights and all property.

Zhang was given a term of 15 years in prison, deprived of political rights for three years, and her property was confiscated.

The court verdict noted that the three have seriously endangered national security.
