China Gives Funding to Visiting Scholars

China has planned this year to use over 100 million yuan in support of university visiting scholars, university key labs construction and basic research work.

University key labs are important bases for undertaking high-level basic research, nurturing experts, and operate as centers for carrying out academic exchanges.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has decided to set up a special fund for visiting scholars to conduct academic exchanges and university labs upgrading.

MOE sponsored 604 visiting scholars in 133 key labs in 49 universities in 1999, with a fund totaling 37.8 million yuan. Among 604 visiting scholars with supporting funds provided were included 246 overseas.

MOE has planned in the first half of this year to pool in 80 million yuan and 40 million yuan in the second in support of visiting scholars.
