China Cutting Down Coal Production, Stockpile

China has made headway in the efforts to reduce coal production and stockpiles for balanced supply and demand and keep this year's coal output within 900 million tons.

Wang Xianzheng, deputy director of the State Administration of Coal Industry, said Thursdy in Beijing that so far the number of legal coal production enterprises has been cut down from 300,000 to 80, 000 nationwide, with a large number of illegal small coal mines closed down.

The situation of coal supply exceeding demand has also been eased to some degree, he added.

The official said that the country's large state-owned coal enterprises will take further steps in the latter half of this year to produce according to market demand, adjust their product mix, and lower production costs in a bid to turn losses into profits.
