Vice-premier Qian Meets Taiwanese Press LeadersChinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen met with a visiting Taiwanese delegation of press leaders in Beijing Thursday.Noting that media is an important window to the mainland for Taiwanese compatriots, the vice-premier expressed his appreciation of the positive role played by friends from the Taiwanese media sector in promoting cross-Straits understanding and relationship. Qian, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said the mainland has always been in support of cross-Straits exchanges, including exchanges between media organizations. He noted that increasing people-to-people exchanges and co-operations in economic, trade, culture, science and technology across the Straits are providing a broader stage for Taiwanese media to come to the mainland for both news reporting and exchanges. The vice-premier expressed his hope that Taiwanese media would play a bigger role in promoting journalism exchange and the relationship between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits. He stressed that stabilizing and developing cross-Straits relations is the common wish of the compatriots on both sides of the Straits and that only by sticking to the One-China principle could cross-Straits relations have a good development. The mainland is willing to exchange opinions with Taiwanese political parties, organizations and individuals on cross-Straits relations and the peaceful reunification of the homeland, Qian said. He expressed the wish that organizations from both sides would work together for further improving cross-Straits relations by strengthening bilateral exchanges, promoting mutual understanding and expanding consensus. The 19-member Taiwanese press delegation arrived in Beijing on Monday for a four-day visit. |
