Chinese Top Legislator Meets Australian Senate President

Chinese top legislator Li Peng said Thursday that China's National People's Congress (NPC) places great importance on developing its relations with the Australian parliament.

Li, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, made the remarks in a meeting with Margaret Reid, president of the Australian Senate, and her delegation.

Li said Reid's China visit will help promote friendly relations between the two countries and parliaments.

"We welcome more Australian parliamentarians to visit China for a better mutual understanding," he said.

Li said Sino-Australian relations have been developing well since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972, and the two countries have had good cooperation in bilateral and multi-lateral arenas.

He said China and Australia are influential countries in the Asia-Pacific region, and therefore the further development of Sino-Australian relations will benefit both countries and serve to promote stability and development in the region and the world at large.

He said bilateral relations have broad prospects.

Li also briefed the delegation on China's policies on population, grain, environment protection and energy.

Reid said the delegation members are interested in having this opportunity to visit China, which provided a good opportunity for them to gain a better understanding of China.
