Chinese and French FMs Hold Talks

Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan stressed Friday that the Chinese government is firmly opposed to sales of arms and related technologies by any country to Taiwan.

In talks with French Minister of Foreign Affairs Hubert Vedrine, Tang said China has always attached great importance to Sino-French ties, adding that the mainstream of the bilateral relations is good.

The cooperation between the two countries in various fields has been fruitful, Tang said. But some problems need to be taken into serious consideration, he emphasized.

China proposes that the two countries proceed from the overall consideration of Sino-French ties and properly handle these problems with a far-sighted and strategic perspective, so as to ensure the smooth development of the bilateral ties without any interruption, Tang said.

Tang reiterated the Chinese government's principled position on the Taiwan issue.

Vedrine said that French-Chinese relations have broad prospects. He reiterated that the French government adheres to the one-China policy.
