South Korean President Meets Japanese FM
President Kim Dae-jung said Friday that South Korea will continue the cooperative system with the United States and Japan.
Meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Yohei Kono, who arrived in Seoul Thursday evening for a two-day visit, Kim said his government will seek strengthened ties with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) based on the results of the inter-Korean summit held in Pyongyang on June 13-15.
Kim expressed his hope that the summit will have positive influence on the talks on diplomatic normalization between Japan and the DPRK.
Earlier Friday, Kono briefed his South Korean counterpart Lee Joung-binn on a special statement on the Korean peninsula situation to be issued at the close of the G-8 summit, which is to be held in Okinawa, Japan on July 21-23 this year.
At their meeting, the two ministers discussed issues on Pyongyang-Tokyo normalization talks, the suffrage of Korean nationals in Japan during local elections, the co-hosting of the 2002 World Cup soccer finals in Korea and Japan and Japanese Emperor's visit to Seoul.
