China Makes Progress in Hepatitis C Vaccine Research

Chinese researchers have designed a compound vaccine after four years of tests on mice, rabbits and monkeys, and found it is resistant to Hepatitis C.

A thesis on the research was recently published in the country' s leading scientific journal -- Chinese Science Bulletin.

The researchers, from Fudan University, No.1 Medical College of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and a medical college in southwest China's Yunnan Province, have used gene engineering techniques in the development of the vaccine.

Hepatitis has prevailed for a long time and spread widely in the world, especially in developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

But researchers said they still have a long way to go before the vaccine is applied to human beings.
