China Questions Election Fairness in Kosovo

China Thursday voiced its concerns over whether a free and fair election can be held in Kosovo, as the relevant UN resolution is not fully implemented in the Yugoslav province.

Chen Xu, member of the Chinese Mission to the United Nations, told an open Security Council meeting that the security situation on the ground remains very grave because of the terrorist actions by Albanian extremists and the ineffective protections given by the international peacekeeping force (KFOR).

"Our worries are whether elections can be held in a free, fair and peaceful environment," he said, adding that the insecure situation on the ground demonstrated that the Security Council resolution 1244 is not fully implemented in Kosovo and the U.N. Interim Administrative Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) and KFOR should work much harder to reverse the trend.

Serb refugees have a lot of difficulties in returning home in Kosovo, and those who have returned home are very few, he said, this is simply because the Albanian extremists are taking terrorist actions to prevent Serb refugees from returning while crimes against those who have returned, such as abductions and murders, frequently took place in Kosovo.
