World Bank's Poverty Relief Project in South China Pays Off
Poverty-stricken people in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have been able to improve their living conditions with the support of loans from the World Bank.
According to statistics, Guangxi has used 113 million US dollars in World Bank loans to carry out 214 aid-the-poor projects in 12 counties and 515 villages since 1995, which have benefited 900,000 poor people.
Thanks to the loans, the region has built 240 school buildings, 570 education centers, and aided 163,000 poor students.
Meanwhile, more than 8,000 rural teachers have attended professional training, 860,000 farmers joined in the local cooperative medical care program, and 91,000 farmers from poverty-stricken areas found jobs in cities and towns.
The World Bank loans have also helped improved power and water supply and transport facilities in the impoverished areas in Guangxi.
The good results of the World Bank-aided projects in Guangxi have attracted the Asian Development Bank and other international financial organizations, which have sent representatives to the region for talks on cooperation in poverty elimination, according to local officials.
