Number of China's Privately-run Schools Hit 8,700

After the State Council published its regulations on privately-run schools, there has been a lot of enthusiasm to privately set up schools according to officials the State Council Education Development Research Center.

Based on incomplete figures, there are currently more than 8,700 privately-run kindergartens, primary schools, middle schools, vocational schools and colleges in China. Among them are 1,095 colleges approved by local authorities, 37 of which have been approved to confer diplomas. The number of students studying in various privately-run schools has reached 10.66 million.

In the past, education was solely the responsibility of the state. But this model has caused China's current education level to lag behind the demand for an educated workforce that the rapidly developing economy requires.
