Fiji rebels release last 18 political hostages

Armed rebels freed deposed Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and 17 remaining political hostages after having held them captive for 56 days in Fiji's parliamentary complex.

"All the hostages have left the complex. They all looked very relieved. Tears have been flowing," local radio station FM96 reported Thursday from inside the parliamentary compound.

Fijian military spokesman Lt. Col. Filipo Tarakinikini said the rebels released the hostages after the influential Great Council of Chiefs said they would not meet to name the nation's new president and vice president unless the captives were released.
