China Intellectual Property Society Holds National Conference

China Intellectual Property Society (CIPS) began its third national conference and the 2000 academic symposium in Beijing on July 12.

More than 200 scholars, experts and lawyers are participating the high-profile meeting which is organized every five years. In a written speech to the conference, Ren Jianxin, vice- chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said that China has made rapid progress in developing the intellectual property system in the past two decades.

More than one million patent applications have been made in China since the country's first patent law was approved in 1985. The intellectual property system has been proved suitable to China's conditions and greatly promoted scientific and technological development in the country, Ren said.

He also urged the CIPS to organize more quality academic research and exchanges in intellectual property protection against the backdrop of rapid development in high technology.

Organizers said that the third executive council of the CIPS will also be elected at the meeting.

Founded in 1985, the CIPS is the country's top think tank for intellectual property protection and related academic research. It is also engaged in spreading intellectual property-related knowledge and promoting global cooperation.
