Smugglers Targets Ancient Brick, Wooden Sculptures

Ancient Chinese brick and wooden sculptures have become new targets of international antique smugglers, customs sources said.

The sources from the Tianjin customhouse said they have intercepted more than 90 pieces of such antiques since the beginning of the year.

So far this month, the customs has intercepted 49 pieces of ancient brick and wooden sculptures in two separate cases. All the relics are forbidden for export by Chinese law.

In one of the cases, 47 pieces of ancient wooden sculptures were discovered in a batch of cargoes declared as old furniture. In another case, two pieces of ancient brick sculptures were found in the luggage of a foreign passenger.

The bricks were later found to be works from an ancient tomb.
