Shaanxi Revamps Irrigation System

Northwest China's Shaanxi province has invested 130 million yuan (15.7 million US dollars) this year in revamping its Guanzhong irrigation system.

The province made a plan last year to invest a total of 200 million US dollars over the next five years in revamping the system. World Bank loans totaling 100 million US dollars will cover half of the investment.

According to the plan, some 155 projects will be launched to improve reservoirs and irrigation canals in the area. So far, 34 such projects have been completed, 1,300 irrigation canals improved, and about 360,000 families in the area benefited from the projects.

The upgraded irrigation system will cover a total 230,000 ha. of farmland. As a result, the area's grain output is expected to rise by as much as 25 percent.

The Guanzhong irrigation system irrigates 600,000 ha of farmland in Shaanxi Province.
