Chinese, US Military Leaders on Taiwan issue

Evasion of the One-China principle has no way out, and Taiwan issue can not and will not be delayed indefinitely, said Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian Wednesday.

"Sino-U.S. relationship is facing opportunities and problems as well, and the most important and sensitive of the problems is the Taiwan issue," Chi said in a meeting with US Defense Secretary William Cohen.

Pointing out that the US side has promised for many times its adherence to the One-China policy, observance of the three Sino-US joint communiques and the "three-no" commitment, Chi urged the U.S. to honor its commitment and not to give the Taiwan authorities a wrong signal.

Reunification of China and to oppose splitting activities have been an irreversible trend and common aspiration of the entire Chinese people, which has also been favored by people all over the world, Chi stressed.

Cohen said that the US side has fully realized the importance and sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, and it will adhere to the One- China policy and abide by the three joint communiques between the two countries.
