China Stepping up University Key Labs Construction

China has made considerable progress in stepping up construction of university key labs. China currently has 150 state-level laboratories, and nearly two third of them are at Beijing and Qinghua universities and other major colleges and universities.

Director Zhao Raoxue with the Department of Science and Technology under the Ministry of Education said that state key labs in universities and those under the MOE are important basic research units to undertake high-level research work, cultivate high quality personnel and conduct academic exchanges between China and other countries.

Building world advanced labs with increased input is of great significance for China to carry out sci-tech institutional reform, reform of the system of personnel, nurturing high-level personnel, fighting for an overall raise of people's ability for creation and enhancement of the overall strength of the nation.

He said that the MOE has adopted a series of measures to step up construction of university key labs, including upgrading of some university key labs, building new labs and founding of a special fund to promote personnel exchanges.

Key labs under the MOE will be increased to 125 from 44 centering on life science, biology, information technology and new materials science.

A fund of 100 million yuan has been planned by MOE to attract more overseas scholars this year.
