Clearly Understand Protracted Nature, Complexity and Arduousness of I-P Work

Importance
This is determined by the status, function and role of ideological-political work in all of the Party's work. Fundamentally speaking, ideological-political work is doing work with man and with the masses, it covers the field of people's thinking, concept and ideology, in order words, it is people's cultural life. The ideal, conviction, the state of mind and feeling of the people are the final factors determining the success or failure of building socialism with Chinese characteristics.
Our reform program is in the decisive stage and development is in a crucial period, in the face of complicated contradictions and arduous tasks, we must unify people's thinking, pool people's strength and inspire the morale of hundreds of millions of people. In a large country like China with a population of 1.2 billion, it is impossible to unite with and gather the people together in the heroic advance toward our common goal without vigorous ideological-political work. The more we push forward economic development and reform and opening up, the more attention we should pay to ideological-political work, this is a basic experience history and reality have told us.
Protracted Nature
This is because achieving the great objective of socialist modernization requires a considerably long process of historical struggle. In our advance, the encounter of many difficulties and risks is unavoidable and the process will not be a plain sailing. As regards the consolidation and development of the socialist system, it will require the painstaking and unremitting efforts of people of several generations, more than 10 generations or even several dozen generations.
The protracted nature of the socialist modernization drive determines that ideological-political work is not an expedient measure for a single incident in a short period, but rather it is a fundamental task, a long-range program, a eternally indispensable work that must be carried out constantly and with perseverance.
Complexity
This is because China is carrying out self-reform for improving and developing the socialist system, and the world is experiencing profound changes. People's thinking is active with the emergence of various viewpoints, correct ideas and erroneous ideas are interwoven and progressive concept and backward concept influence each other. Western antagonistic forces are stepping up their efforts to "Westernize" and "split up" China, so the struggle between infiltration and anti-infiltration, subversion and anti-subversion will exist for a long time.
