New Guangzhou University Makes Debut after Merger
The new Guangzhou University, born of the merger of nine local colleges, will help train more high quality personnel for the sustainable development of the city, said Chen Chuanyu, vice-mayor of Guangzhou.
"The municipal government will invest a total of 1.3 billion yuan (US$156 million) over four years to help make the university a pioneer in China's college reform programme," Chen said Tuesday.
Guangzhou University unveiled a plaque yesterday afternoon, amid high expectations for the merger.
The new university is made up of Guangzhou Normal College, South China Construction College and the former Guangzhou University.
"The idea of consolidation could be dated back to the early 1990s, when we found that some municipal colleges were relatively small in scale and of poor quality," said Chen.
Guangzhou has owned six colleges and 12 adult schools since 1978.
Colleges and schools have lagged behind Guangzhou's social and economic growth in recent years.
"After five years of study, the consolidated Guangzhou University is making its debut, Chen said.
The new university can accommodate some 20,000 full-time students. It employs 1,100 teachers.
