Passenger Ship Hits Rocks on Upper Reaches of Yangtze River

A Chinese passenger ship sailed into rock-studded waters Monday night on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, but no deaths or injuries were reported among the 204 passengers and 26 crew members.

According to the Ministry of Communications, the Wanzhou Ship, owned by the Chongqing Wanzhou Shipping Company, sailed into a rocky area by mistake on the upper waters of the Three Gorges at 9:20 p.m. Monday, while en route from Yichang to Wanzhou.

The local maritime rescue department immediately dispatched a rescue ship to the spot, and sent another passenger ship, the Jiangyu 109, to the scene.

All passengers and crew had been transferred to the Jiangyu 109 by 2:05 a.m. Tuesday morning.
