Rainstorms Kill 10 in Southwest ChinaRainstorms have killed 10 people and injured at least 68 in southwest China's Sichuan province since July 1.Local sources say that the rainstorms have been raiding Dazhou City and Bazhong Prefecture since early July, damaging more than 22,000 houses and 150 kilometers of highways. A land slide buried a family of six on July 3, with the youngest being only one year old, sources say. The rainstorms have triggered floods that caused power cut in a number of towns and villages. The dam of a major reservoir is also in a dilapidating state. The disaster has affected 1.27 million people and caused some 9 million yuan (1.1 million U.S. dollars) of economic losses so far. The Sichuan provincial government has sent rescue teams to the affected areas and many victims have been evacuated. |
