Arafat Arrives in Washington for Mideast Summit

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat arrived in Washington shortly before midnight Monday to take part in a make-or-break Mideast peace summit with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and US President Bill Clinton.

On his arrival at Andrews Air Force base, just outside Washington, Arafat was met by awaiting officials including the US consul general for Jerusalem John Herpst and Hanan Ashrawi, spokeswoman for Arafat's delegation in Washington.

Arafat was whisked away in a limousine to the VIP lounge at the airport before boarding a helicopter to the US presidential retreat at Camp David, Maryland, where the summit was due to begin Tuesday, a US State Department official said.

Barak was expected to arrive later Tuesday.
