Chinese President Meets U.S. Religious Leader
President Jiang Zemin said Tuesday morning that a well-developed Sino-US relationship is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and conducive to the world peace and stability.

Jiang made the remarks in his meeting with Rabbi Arthur Schneier, president of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation of the United States.

After recalling their first meeting here in 1998, Jiang said he appreciated Schneier's efforts in promoting the exchanges between the two peoples, in particular between the religious circles of the two countries.

Jiang said that the current Sino-US relationship "is generally good." All those with strategic and long-term perspective would agree that the advancement of such a relationship is "in the fundamental interests of the two peoples and conducive to the world peace and stability," he said.

Jiang also briefed the guests on China's religious policy.

Schneier said he would continue his efforts in enhancing the mutual exchange and understanding between the great Chinese and American peoples.

Schneier, a renowned religious figure in the US, is paying the visit at the invitation of Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.
