China to Build a Group of Nature Reserves in West

It's reported that China will build a group of nature reserves in its western regions to bring the fountainheads of the major rivers and ecologically fragile regions into the orbit of sustainable development.

In the coming 10 years, China will establish 270 new nature reserves with a total area of 65 million hectares in the western regions. By then, the total area of nature reserves in the west China will account for 13.33 percent of China's territory.

China's west is the birthplace of major rivers like the Yangtze River, the Yellow River and the Pearl River, a main water concentration area as well as a main habitat of wild animals. It exerts great influence on the State's ecological environment. Up to now, the 14 western provinces and municipality have set up more than 400 nature reserves to protect the animals and their habits.
