HK Observatory Says Records Strong Quake in Alaska

The Hong Kong Observatory said it recorded a strong earthquake in Alaska measuring about 6.5 on the open-ended Richter scale at 0144 GMT on Tuesday.

The epicentre was initially determined to be in the vicinity of Kodiak Island about 470 km (290 miles) southwest of Anchorage, Alaska of the United States, the observatory said.

It gave no further details of the earthquake.

Kodiak Island is home to a major commercial fishing port with more than 770 vessels and has an estimated population of 13,848.
