Scholars Discuss Portuguese Teaching in Macao

Presidents of two institutions of higher learning said at an on-going seminar here that the teaching of Portuguese language should be continued even though Macao has returned to the motherland.

Iu Vai Pan and Li Xiangyu, presidents of the University of Macao and Macao Polytechnic Institute respectively, said the number of students applying to study Portuguese would decrease in the new semester. Both expected that the teaching should be carried on and Macao should become a Portuguese training center in Asia.

Students should know the significance of studying Portuguese, Li Xiangyu said, adding that his institute would try to recruit more students from China's inland areas, east Asian countries and Hong Kong.

More than 20 scholars from Portugal, China's inland areas and Macao attended the seminar on Portuguese teaching.

However, the local Chinese newspaper of Va Kio commented that less than five percent of Macao residents understand Portuguese although it is one of the official languages in Macao. The government of the Macao Special Administrative Region should work out policies in accordance with practical needs to avoid waste of money.
