Chinese President Meets Ghanaian Vice-President

President Jiang Zemin said Tuesday morning China and Ghana should continue to promote bilateral relationship 40 years after it has been forged.

New progress has been made in all-round cooperation between the two countries in recent years, said Jiang in a meeting with visiting Ghanaian Vice-President John Evans Atta Mills.

The Chinese president described Ghana as "an old friend." Even with great changes taking place internationally and domestically, China and Ghana have furthered their friendly and cooperative relations in line of mutual understanding and respect, equal treatment and sincere cooperation, Jiang said.

Jiang expressed appreciation of Ghana's adherence to one-China policy.

He also briefed the guests on China's economic development, with agricultural development in particular.

Mills conveyed regards from Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings to Jiang.

After extending gratitude to China for its assistance to Ghana, Mills told Jiang that his country attached importance to its ties with China. He paid the visit amid fine political atmosphere so he hoped such a climate can help push forward the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.

He told Jiang he was impressed by China's achievements over the past 20 years and he could learn a lot.

He stressed Ghana will stick to one-China stance as usual.

Mills arrived here Sunday for a seven-day visit as guest of Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao. Hu held formal talks with Mills Monday.

Besides Beijing, Mills and his party are scheduled to visit Shenzhen, a pioneering special economic zone in south China's Guangdong Province, Qingdao, a coastal port city in east China's Shandong Province, and Shanghai, China's financial and commercial powerhouse.
