Water Supply in Chinese Cities UpChina supplied an average 215 million cubic meters of water for its cities per day in 1999, more than 88 times those of 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded, "China Water Resources News" reported Monday.The Chinese cities used 46.75 billion cubic meters of water last year; the figure for each urban resident reached 217.5 liters per day on average. The rise in water supply is partly attributed to the construction of water supply facilities. Statistics show that China invested more than 35 billion yuan (about 4.22 billion U.S. dollars) to build urban water supply facilities over the Eighth Five-Year Plan period (from 1991 to 1995), and the figure continued to increase over the Ninth Five-Year Plan period (from 1996 to 2000). The country has adopted a series of policies on water saving, environmental protection, the improvement of water quality and the use of groundwater since 1980. China has about 400 cities. |
