Birds Find Paradise in Yellow River DeltaBirds have found a paradise in the reed marshes on the Yellow River Delta. The harmonious ecological environment came into being after the government of east China's Shandong Province adopted the policy of turning farmland into marshes. In the 1970s, reed marshes on the Yellow River Delta were turned into farmland. However, farmers did not get expected harvests either in grain or in cotton, due to saline-alkali soil there. Land reclamation also caused soil erosion and destroyed the nests of birds. In recent years, the local government became aware of the importance of ecological balance and realized that reeds can produce money as well. The local government has encouraged people to plant reeds. In Wudi County alone on the delta, farmers have planted more than 4, 000 hectares of reeds. Some Chinese and foreign businessmen have established reeds processing companies, manufacturing reeds curtain and other products. In Wudi, reeds products have been sold to more than 20 countries and regions, earning the county 26 million U.S. dollars annually, official statistics showed.
