"Call The Mayor" Hotline Well Received In China's Changchun

For the 2 million residents in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin province, it has become easier to get in touch with the mayor.

Residents have become accustomed to just picking up the telephone and dialing "12345",the hotline number to a special office established by the mayor. In the past year, the hotline received more than 125,000 calls from residents, said an official in charge of the hotline.

"We have investigated all the issues reported or any complaints made by the residents and about 85 per cent of these issues have been resolved," he said.

According to Li Shu, mayor of Changchun, the hotline will be improved and expanded so it can become the most effective and convenient way to hear what citizens have to say.

In addition to the hotline, the city also made public an e-mail address last year to solicit opinions, complaints and advice.

"We have received more than 1,000 e-mails from not only our residents, but also friends from abroad," said an official source, adding that 470 of these e-mails were from people with advice on how to deal with urban and social development issues, and some of them have been adopted by the related government departments.

Changchun is a famous production base for China's automobile and film industries.
