New Campaign Launched in HK to Crack Down on Porn Articles

A new campaign was launched Monday in Hong Kong to crack down on pornographic articles, according to the local authorities.

This year's campaign will target retail spots selling pornographic VCDs, Acting Commissioner for Television and Entertainment Licensing William Lee told a press briefing on the details of the campaign.

"We will step up enforcement action to tackle the problem of pornographic VCDs and their easy access to young persons under the age of 18, which is of considerable concern to the community," Lee said.

The campaign is jointly initiated by the Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority, the Hong Kong Police Force and the Customs and Excise Department.

"The campaign aims to draw the public's attention to the problem of young people being exposed to indecent materials and promote a better understanding of the Control of Obscene and Indecent Articles Ordinance," Lee said.

The acting commissioner urged parents to pay more attention to their kids and provide them with guidance on the selection of leisure reading materials and use of the Internet. And teachers and youth workers also play an important role in guiding young people, he added.

During the campaign, frequent joint actions will be taken against various wholesale and retail outlets, and the inspection of passengers and goods at the airport and other entry points will be enhanced, according to Lee.

The authority will distribute pamphlets and promotional souvenirs to give the public and in particular newspaper vendors and persons-in-charge of video shops and computer software shops a better understanding of the relevant legislation.
