China Telecom Beijing Subsidiary Inaugurated
China Telecom's Beijing branch was established Monday, separating governmental functions from business operations.
Zhao Jidong, general manager of the new subsidiary, said at today's inauguration ceremony that they would give priority to development of services including Internet, ISDN and special digital lines.
He said his company would focus investment on construction of net infrastructure, including ATM broadband commercial nets and optic cable transmission nets, and on expansion of international direct dialing (IDD) and domestic long-distance dialing switchboards.
A state-owned enterprise, the Beijing branch of China Telecom has a registered capital of 9.4 billion yuan (about 1.13 billion U. S. dollars). It is authorized to operate almost all telecommunications and information services in Beijing except mobile telecommunications and paging service.
Through late May, telephone switchboards in Beijing had a combined handling capacity for 7.612 million calls. Now every 100 people in Beijing have 65 telephone sets.
The new company is also authorized to manage 747,000 Internet subscribers, 54,000 ISDN subscribers, as well as 5,722 corporate subscribers of special digital lines in the Chinese capital.
