Noted Chinese Painter Dies at 89

The body of Guan Shanyue, one of the best known contemporary artists of traditional Chinese painting who died in Guangzhou on July 3 at the age of 89, was cremated Monday in the provincial capital of Guangdong in South China.

Thousands of government officials, artists, friends and students from at home and abroad paid their last respects to the late artist at the Guangzhou Funeral Home.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin sent a message of condolence to the artist's family.

Guan Shanyue is widely acclaimed as the most distinguished painter among the second generation of the Lingnan School. Two of his greatest paintings are at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

He had served as the vice-chairman of the Chinese Artists' Association, professor and deputy president of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, president of the Guangdong Fine Arts School and head of the Guangdong Studio of Paintings.
