Earthquakes Rattle TaiwanTwo earthquakes, one registering 5.2 on the Richter scale, jolted Taiwan Monday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, seismologists said in Taipei.The second tremor hit at 04:32 p.m. (0832 GMT), with the epicenter 35.9 kilometers (21.5 miles) southeast of the eastern Hualien city. It originated 39 kilometers (23.4 miles) below the earth's surface. With a magnitude of 4.7, the first tremor struck at 02:23 p.m. (0623 GMT). It originated 33.3 kilometers (20 miles) south of the northeastern Ilan city and 19.7 kilometers (11.8 miles) below the earth's surface. On June 11, a quake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale hit central Taiwan killing two people and injuring 36. Minor tremors and aftershocks have been a daily occurrence since a deadly quake on September 21 last year, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, which killed 2,400 people. It was the biggest earthquake to hit the island in 100 years. |
