10,000 Evacuated in Southwest China After Mountain Slides

More than 10,000 people had been evacuated to safe places by Sunday morning in southwest China's Chongqing Metropolis after their houses were threatened by mountain slides caused by days of torrential rains.

According to officials of the Yunyang county, medical teams have been dispatched to disaster-stricken areas to prevent the explosion of any epidemics and effort is being made to repair the road for the supply of relief goods and materials.

Six days of torrential rains starting from June 1 caused eight major mountain slides and 2,600 minor ones in the county near the Three Gorges Reservoir area now under construction.

According to official figures, more than 1,500 houses were completely destroyed by the slides, which also destroyed the roads connecting the county with the outside.

Total losses by the slides were estimated at about 200 million yuan.
