OPEC Experts Open Preparatory Meeting for September Summit

The experts from 11 member states of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) gathered in Algiers Saturday for a preparatory meeting for the OPEC summit in Caracas, capital of Venezuela, in September.

Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines Chakib Khelil and his Venezuelan counterpart Ali Rodriguez, currently OPEC president, and OPEC Secretary-General Alhaji Rilwanu Lukman attended the inaugural session of the meeting, the Algerian News Agency reported.

During the two-day meeting, experts are to prepare a set of documents, recommendations, proposals, programs, memos and communiqu¨¦ for the September summit.

At the meeting, the experts will mull over the future role of the cartel in the global economy, environmental protection and the development of appropriate technology.

They are also expected to discuss the issue of boosting and beefing up technological cooperation between OPEC member states and non-OPEC producers and consumers.

The OPEC members are Algeria, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.
