NPC Expels Lawmaker

Xie Yongwu, a deputy to the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC) from southeast China's Fujian Province, was recently expelled from the top lawmaking body in the wake of charges of being involved in smuggling.

The decision was made by the Standing Committee of the Fujian Provincial People's Congress, according to a notice issued by the NPC Standing Committee.

The notice said that the provincial lawmaking body elected Xi Jinping, governor of Fujian, to the seat, and this was approved by the NPC Standing Committee.

In addition, the notice said that three deputies to the Ninth NPC had passed away. They were Yun Bulong, a Mongolian from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Sun Jifang, female, from east China's Shandong Province, and Zhang Lianghe from southeast China's Sichuan Province.

Currently, there are 2,980 deputies to the Ninth NPC, according to the notice.
