Yugoslavia Supports Statement of "Shanghai Five" SummitThe Yugoslav government fully supports the joint statement of the "Shanghai Five" nations at their latest summit in Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan, the Yugoslav Foreign Ministry said Saturday. The Dushanbe Statement contains principles that are of great importance to maintaining the world peace, the ministry said. These principles include democratizing international relations, defending state sovereignty and territorial integrity under the U. N. Charter, and opposing interference in other countries' internal affairs under the pretext of "checking humanitarian disasters" and "protecting human rights." The Yugoslav government sees special significance in the strong condemnation by the five heads of state of NATO's barbarous aggression of Yugoslavia last year in violation of the U.N. Charter and international law, the ministry said. The Yugoslav government firmly believes that an overwhelming majority of the countries in the world will support the principled stance against hegemonism and power politics affirmed in the Dushanbe Statement, the ministry added. Presidents of China, Tajikistan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan attended the one-day meeting in Dushanbe last Wednesday, commonly known as the "Shanghai Five" summit, that has been held annually since 1996. |
