Hong Kong to Encourage Learning Beyond ClassroomTung Chee Hwa, chief executive of Hong Kong SAR, joined an education expo Saturday and heard experiences shared among schools and social service agencies in encouraging learning beyond the classroom.Tung said that education aimed at helping students develop their potential fully and attain all-round development. An effective way to achieve this was to provide students with diversified and enlightening learning experiences. The "Expo on the Partnership for the Promotion of Life-wide Learning", organized by the Education Commission, provided a forum for schools and social service agencies and uniformed groups to exchange views and experiences, discuss cooperation plans and establish partnership to promote life-wide learning. Tung commended schools and social service agencies for their good work in offering opportunities for life-wide learning and encouraged them to continue to develop a long-lasting partnership for the benefit of students. The Chief Executive said that it was their target to provide quality education in Hong Kong because in the next century knowledge-based economies would take the lead in the world. It was imperative that their education system kept pace with the times. He added that teaching was a highly respected profession. We should give support and encouragement to teachers for their hard work and contribution. On arrival at the expo, Tung first visited stalls set up by social service agencies, including the Red Cross, girl guides and air cadets, to introduce their programs for young people. To wind up his visit, the Chief Executive took part in an experience sharing session where participants exchanged views on teaching practices and successful experiences. |
