New "Forest" Backs Hong Kong's Asian Games BidThe "Asian Games Forest" signified the community's full support for Hong Kong's bid to host the 2006 Asian Games, the Chief Secretary for the administration of the Hong Kong SAR, Anson Chan said on Saturday.Speaking at the kick-off ceremony for the "Asian Games Forest" Tree Planting Day at the Hong Kong International Airport, Chan said: "It is very encouraging to see more than 1,000 young people, community leaders and guests supporting and taking part in this very meaningful activity by planting more than 10,000 trees in the 'Asian Games Forest'. "The most meaningful part of the event is that 100 young volunteers will attempt to break the Guinness World Record by planting more than 2,000 trees within one hour," Chan said. "I hope people of Hong Kong, like the guests and young people today, will be aware of the importance of environmental protection and will care about and support environmental protection and greening work of Hong Kong," Chan added. The 100 young volunteers succeeded in setting a new world record by planting a total of 3,252 trees within one hour. A video recording and other supporting documents of the record-breaking effort will be forwarded to Guinness World Records Limited for acknowledgment of a new world record. The four cities of Hong Kong, New Delhi, Kuala Lumpur and Doha, have officially presented their bids to host the 2006 Asian Games. |
