Bus Accident Kills 31 People in South China City

At least 31 people were killed in a bus accident in Liuzhou, an industrial city in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Friday night.

The accident occurred at 22:22 (Beijing Time) Friday when the bus veered off a bridge and plunged 30 meters into Liujiang River. Thirty-one bodies have been recovered so far following strenuous rescue efforts.

The victims include 21 women and one two-year-old boy. However, the exact number of passengers aboard the bus is not known.

The bus fell into the river after it turned sharply left in the central part of the Hudong bridge and slammed more than 10 meters of the bridge shield, according to witnesses.

Liujiang is currently in flood season, which brings great difficult to the rescue work. Local rescue teams soon rushed to the spot and salvaged the bus at 2:58 Saturday morning.

Investigation into the accident is going on.
