Water Traffic Resumes at Three GorgesWater traffic near the construction site of the Three Gorges Dam, on the middle section of the Yangtze River, has been resumed, five days after it was broken off by surging floods.About 42,000 passengers who were stranded on 464 ships have already been dispersed via 1,466 buses dispatched by nearby Yichang City's transportation department. Beginning July 2, a diversion channel and a temporary ship lock on the dam, the only passages of transportation on the Three Gorges section after it was blocked in 1997 for the construction of the huge dam, were closed because the water flow had surpassed 45,000 cu m per second, or the limit for safe transportation on the river. |
