Beijing Brings Order to Used Car Market

The Beijing Zhonglian Used Car Market opened Thursday, indicating a start for the reform of second-hand vehicle deals.

The market, with the car agent company overseeing the full purchase process, operates differently than traditional car sales companies.

Jointly funded by the Beijing Automobile Market Management Center, the Beijing Heng Wu Automobile Company and the Beijing Zhonglian Automobile Market, the new second-hand vehicle market covers an area of 900,000 square km.

Sun Jiansheng, director in charge of the automobile management under the local industrial and commercial bureau, noted that Beijing now has two used vehicle businesses and will set up a third soon.

The first used car market was set up in Beijing in 1985. In the past decade, the business volume of the city's second-hand vehicles increased to nearly 60,000 in 1999 from some 1,000 vehicles in 1985.
