Grasshoppers Assault Chinese City

Clouds of locusts have landed in northeast China's Benxi city and eaten up 3,333 hectares of wheat and corns.

Reports say people were astonished to find that there were more than 10,000 locusts gathering in an area of one square meters.

Many locusts are so hungry that they have begun eating tree leaves that are not their normal diet, causing serious threat to forests.

Local officials attributed the plague to the drought that is hovering over north China, adding that if the high temperature continues, the situation will get worse.

At least five species of locusts have flied into the city, making the eliminating job a hard nut, according to the officials.

Locusts have also been rampant in other parts of north China, including Hebei province and the suburbs of Beijing.
