Campus Ideological, Ethical Education EmphasizedChina's educational authorities on Wednesday urged schools nationwide to enhance ideological and ethical education among both students and teachers.Minister of Education Chen Zhili said in Beijing Wednesday that greater importance should be attached to ideological and political work, as well as the work of building the Chinese Communist Party on campuses in the new circumstances. More young and highly-qualified intellectuals in colleges and universities will be encouraged to join the Party. Courses to introduce Marxism and Deng Xiaoping theory and to enhance students' ethical awareness should be available at more colleges, Chen said at a national meeting on Party building in colleges. The main ideological trends on the Chinese campuses are steady, healthy and positive, Chen noted at the meeting, which was attended by provincial-level educational officials and Party secretaries of some 100 colleges. But, she pointed out, lots of prominent problems still exist. At another national meeting in Beijing Wednesday, Vice-Minister of Education Lu Fuyuan stressed that measures should be taken to strengthen ethical education among students and teachers in primary and middle schools. The official said some schools have failed to enable their students to develop morally, even though intellectual education has been enhanced. "Some teachers are unqualified in terms of working abilities and professional ethics. Some students lack a sense of sympathy and responsibility, as well as political and legal awareness," Lu said, calling it a major cause of the rise of juvenile delinquency in recent years. He said innovative measures should be taken to educate students to be diligent, while teachers should be urged to love, treat equally and respect students. |
